The City of Sweetwater is a home-rule city operating under the current charter adopted in 1956.

Governing Body
The governing body is known as the City Commission. The Commission initiated a two-part program in April 1985 to implement a single-member district plan. The plan was completed in 1986.

Composition
The Commission is now comprised of a mayor and four commissioners. Each of the commissioners are Sweetwater residents and represent a specific precinct. The mayor is elected at large by voters.
